Durban Jewish Social Services is the umbrella organization under which Jewel House falls. Jewel House offers a home away from home for our most vulnerable community members. Our residents live in a house on the Berea with comfortable accommodation within a loving, safe, happy environment where all their needs are met.
They receive special care from our wonderful Housemother, staff, nursing sister and social worker. Some of our residents have lived at Jewel House for over 25 years. Some of these people do not have any family left in South Africa and the residents and staff have become like their family.
They enjoy special Shabbat Meals and celebrate all the Chagim at Jewel House. Our residents are given medical treatment and any physical therapy they require as well as psychological and psychiatric treatment. Our psychologist runs regular group therapy and sees residents privately. During the December holidays when Masada (sheltered employment for the residents) is closed, we organise outings for them. They thoroughly enjoy shows and events, as well as walks along the beachfront promenade. It’s a busy few weeks which they look forward to every year.
